An offer he couldn't refuse. A murder he can’t remember…
John Milton’s life is about to change. The former government assassin follows a lead to Manila that he hopes will change his life. But he never expected to wake up in an unfamiliar hotel room beside a murder victim. And, unfortunately for him, Milton doesn’t remember a thing about the night before.
Thrown into a gruesome Filipino prison, he puts together the clues that led to his betrayal. With no allies and even less hope, Milton must use his wits to escape and take revenge on the men who put him there. If he doesn’t lose his life in the process…
Blackout is the latest book in Mark Dawson’s gripping series of thrillers. If you like page-turning action, globetrotting spies, and perfectly-paced suspense, then you’ll love this series from a USA Today bestseller.
Blackout John Milton #10 John Milton Thrillers edition by Mark Dawson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks
Mark Dawson has written what I think is the best Milton yet, and that's saying a lot after "The Jungle"The writer sets the scene for "Blackout" like a petri-dish containing a growth medium for deceit, graft and murder.
The Philippines of today and all that they have become. With a new president who is, in his own words, a killer, and has encouraged the police and others to carry out his new social policy's as he would himself.
It is as real (and as current) as a novel is likely to get, and keeps the reader on edge right to the nail-biting end.
This thriller describes a masterfully assembled conspiracy, in an environment made to order for its success. Hard to see how Milton is going to
survive.
You'll never know where the next diabolical twist will lead, even if you are a great guesser. A very satisfying page turner.

Blackout John Milton #10 John Milton Thrillers edition by Mark Dawson Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I'm writing this review after having read the advance copy of this book, as well as having bought and read the published version. I'm so very grateful to Mark that he continues to find new predicaments for Milton! The lead in for this story, the premise that John had fathered a child in the Philippines some years back... what a perfectly twisted way for Dawson to draw Milton into the dark side - the deadly side - of corruption and political machinations.
Having lived 6.5 years on an island near Manila, it was grand to revisit familiar spots and sights and experiences through Milton's eyes. It's been a great reminder of the things I loved best (and a few that I most intensely disliked) about living as an expatriate in this lovely - and occasionally unlovely - tropical world. I hope readers accept the accuracy of Dawson's portrayal, but are not deterred from visiting and experiencing this country. There's a lot of WW II history to be found here, as well as a rich heritage of cultures, wonderful foods, and centuries-old buildings, and many beautiful tropical beaches to enjoy.
Can't wait to see what's up next for Milton!
I really am enjoying all of Mark Dawson's books, I feel like he is a prolific writer, and I seem to finally have caught up enough to have a week or two off before the next book comes out. In general, I really like the way Mark has developed his books, with compelling characters and the interwoven cameos and intrigue among the books.
If you have read them, catch up on the parallel world of Isabella Rose, as there are sinister forces at work in the world, and while they have not appeared in the John Milton series, there is a definite undercurrent of a hidden power acting in this book as well.
I liked that this book is set in the PI and that it takes a loomat current events there, including the new president's War on Drugs. Many of the events don't necessarily have to be in this setting, such as the incarceration and other rural settings, but it does shed some light on the kind of environment that is believable when vigilantes and extrajudicial murders are part of the culture.
Good job overall, though I did feel like this book more than others seemed to leverage a lot of the same skills, similar scenes as some other books, but for the money and the entertainment value, it's a true winner!
I can't imagine how I missed Blackout, since I follow Mark's work closely on FB a Twitter. but I did. bad on me.
This time Mark goes to the Philippines to suss out if he really has a son with a former asset--who, of course, ends up dead in no time. (John has a really sucky love life). So it doesn't go so well for our hero. Now, I have never been to the Philipines, and I don't think I want to after reading his book. Now, I have never been to the Philipines, and I don't think I want to after reading his book.Since I don't have much money, I'd probably end up in a serious dive bar and get murdered by either by a nasty criminal thug or a nasty Duterte thug. But aren't they the same?
This book is bloody and relentless. The scenes in the prison are particularly horrifying. His descriptions feel so real, that it almost makes me think he was once a guest there, but I'm guessing not. Mark is gunning to be the next Zola at this rate. I don't remember our hero being beaten to such a pulp as he is in Blackout. Curiously, as I've noted elsewhere, he exhibits amazing restorative talents, no one seems to notice that he looks like a bloody Mountain Rivera as he walks through respectable streets and restaurants.
Blackout is enough to convince just about anyone that Duterte needs to be overthrown post-haste. Perhaps John Milton could team up with Isabella Rose to finish him off. Before that, though, I still want him to take a dishwashing job in Columbus (OH) and clean up this center of bougie corruption.
